Miriam Creates An Eglomisé Screen for Exhibition
NYC MAKERS: The MAD Biennial
July 1 - Oct. 12, 2014
On July 1st, a new exhibition opened at the Museum of Arts and Design called NYC Makers: The MAD Biennial. Miriam is honored to have been selected to participate in this unusual show.
This is the first in MAD's new biennial exhibition series examining cultures of making in urban communities and showcases the work of artists, artisans
and designers who live throughout the five boroughs of New York City.
For the exhibit, Miriam created a new églomisé piece entitled Fata Morgana. Four pairs of églomisé glass panels create a large standing screen, clad in a bronze frame.
"I've always been fascinated by a type of mirage called a fata morgana. This naturally occurring atmospheric condition significantly alters
the object upon which it is based, often so much that the object is completely unrecognizable. Working with reflection and light to create illusions
with varying qualities of distortions that are stretched or compressed, the design for this églomisé screen finds inspiration in the hot desert to
explore this optical phenomenon. The shapes and textures behind the glass change depending on the position viewed, the time of day and the angle of light." - Miriam
Makers were nominated by NYC-based cultural leaders and civic figures from a range of trades and disciplines and then selected by
a panel including Director Glenn Adamson and Exhibition Curator Jake Yuzna, as well as cultural leaders representing all five boroughs.
NYC Makers: The MAD Biennial runs through October 12th, 2014. The Museum of Arts and Design is located at 2 Columbus Circle in New York City.

Verre Eglomisé Class at Gilding in New Orleans 2013
Miriam will be teaching a class in Verre Eglomisé this coming fall at the Society of Gilders Conference, Gilding in New Orleans 2013. This
week long celebration of the gilding arts will be held in conjunction with the Louisiana State Museum in the historic Cabildo from Oct. 20th to 26th.
A wide range of in-depth gilding classes will be offered along with roundtable discussions and special lectures by world renowned experts in the field.
Members of the Society will have the opportunity to show their work in an exhibition at the Cabildo and you can participate in a community project of
gilding at St. Alphonsus Church. We are in New Orleans, so there will be lots of socializing too, including an evening of Zydeco music & dancing.
Miriam is very happy to be attending and teaching at the conference this year as her schedule allows very few opportunities to share this wonderful technique.
The class may fill very quickly so if you are interested, please don't delay. Visit the SOG web site to register.
